Bingham Kennels FAQ

Bingham Kennels - Frequently Asked Questions

Do you health test your dogs?

Yes. All of the dogs in our breeding program undergo extensive genetic health testing before being included. You can find all test results under the DNA Health Certificates tab.

What color are your dogs typically? Our dogs are liver and roan, which are breed standard colors for German Wirehaired Pointers. We are committed to preserving the breed standard in our program.

The puppies look “black and white” when they're born—will they change colors?

Yes! German Wirehaired Pointer puppies are born white with very dark brown spots. As they grow, their coat darkens and ticking (small spots) becomes more prominent. Over time, their coat transitions to the adult pattern of brown and gray.

Are the puppies dewormed, vaccinated, and provided with a health record?

Yes. Puppies are dewormed at age-appropriate intervals and receive their 6-week vaccinations. Each puppy comes with a detailed health record, including vaccination and deworming history.

Do your puppies still have their dewclaws?

Yes. We do not remove dewclaws, as we believe they serve a functional purpose. Dewclaws act like thumbs, providing traction and aiding in climbing—especially beneficial for hunting dogs navigating varied terrain.

Are your puppies tails docked?

Yes, all puppies have their tails docked within the first 72 hours after birth.

What is your opinion on spaying/neutering before 18 months? We recommend delayed spaying/neutering. Waiting until after growth is complete (around 18 months) helps avoid potential health risks, as supported by scientific studies.

What food do you feed your puppies?

Our puppies are fed Complete Puppy by Southern States, a high-protein, sport dog formula. We recommend continuing puppy food for the first year before transitioning to adult food. Each puppy goes home with a starter bag of food and a transition guide if you choose to switch brands.

How do I care for my dog’s coat?

The best method is hand stripping, which maintains the coat's coarse texture. We discourage cutting the coat, as it can permanently alter its texture. Some groomers specialize in hand stripping, and instructional videos are widely available online for those who want to learn at home.

Will my puppy be socialized?

Yes. Socialization is key to development. Our puppies are raised in our home with daily interaction from us and our four children. They are exposed to various toys, environments, and wing training to help develop pointing instincts. We also introduce them to a range of sounds, including louder noises, to support desensitization for future hunting scenarios.

Does my puppy come with registration papers?

Yes. All puppies come with AKC registration paperwork. However, we reserve the right to limit registration at any time prior to purchase.

What is your deposit policy?

Deposits are non-refundable, unless we are unable to provide a puppy. In that case, you may choose a full refund or apply the deposit to a future litter. Deposits determine pick order, so the earlier your deposit is placed, the higher your position in the selection process.

Can we buy two puppies together?

No. We do not sell two puppies from the same litter to the same household due to the risk of littermate syndrome, which can cause puppies to bond more closely with each other than with humans, leading to behavioral and training challenges.

Do you ship puppies?

Yes, we offer shipping and have done so many times. Additional fees apply and can be discussed if this is your preferred delivery method.
